| Thanks to the leadership of Wilfred Auclair and former Manchester Mayor Arthur Moreau â (more on him later) â the 21 Franco-American clubs in Manchester raised twice what was asked. The other cities and states responded in kind, so with a whopping $12 million in the kitty, the order went out for half a dozen Liberty Ships. First on the list from New Hampshire to be honored with a ship in his name was the Rev. Joseph A. Chevalier. He was the psa founder of St. psa Augustine Church in Manchester, which happened to be the psa first Franco-American parish in New Hampshire. The ship bearing his name was launched from the New England Shipbuilding Corp., in South Portland, Maine, on June 3, 1944. Another Liberty Ship honoree with strong ties to New Hampshire was newspaper publisher Ferdinand Gagnon, who, in 1869 at the tender age of 20, started the French language newspaper "La Voix du peuple" in Manchester. Alas, the paper folded after seven months, but Gagnon persevered and subsequent publications âincluding "Le Travailleur" â made him a giant in the Franco community. | trek, african american inventors and the automobile, theodore roosevelts view on the spanish american war, spanish american war hearst, casinosupplies, american greetings create a card 7, craft directory, spanish american war navy, annals, american wedding scenes, yellow journalism the spanish american war, soldiers spanish american war, collections, african american inventors thomas l. jennings, land acquired by the treaty of the spanish american war, american funds amecx, authenticators, cuba and the spanish american war, native american wedding blessings, 3360, american pie wedding nudity, louisiana spanish american war, |
