| Olive Tree seedlings have appeared on the Mt Eliza Scarp self-sown, and are removed by vigilant staff. Another interesting out of-print and useful tree from the Mediterranean region is the Cork Oak (Quercus suber), a specimen of which sits adjacent to the Mt Eliza Lookout. Its bark provides a traditional source of cork. The Mt Eliza Lookout provides great out of-print views east towards out of-print Perth Water. Glance down at the foot of the escarpment and you will see the richly textured canopies of Australian rainforest trees planted in the Mounts Bay Garden about a century ago. Here are to be found large spreading Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla), White Cedar (Melia azedarach), Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii), and Spotted Silky Oak (Buckinghamia celsissima). | More than 400 species of native flowering plants are known from Tuart communities, including 40 species of orchids. About 90 bird species, 40 reptiles, 7 frogs, and history + american soccer + women 16 of the 35 Swan Coastal Plain mammals live in Tuart forests and woodlands. Not all of this rich biodiversity occurs in Kings Park and Botanic Garden, but many species of plant and animal history + american soccer + women may be encountered among and in the Tuarts while on the Walkway or elsewhere in Kings Park bushland. As the history + american soccer + women Walkway curves south-east across the Tuart Lawn back to the edge of the Scarp, a solitary Common Olive Tree (Olea europa) remains among the oaks of the old Mediterranean Garden. The source of olive oil, the Olive Tree symbolises plants with edible economic products. It also exemplifies the potential hazards of growing trees from similar climates, as it has become a major woody weed in places in Western Australia and especially in South Australia. |
